Food Safe BPA Free Mylar bags

Food Safe BPA Free Mylar bags

BPA is a chemical that has been in the news a lot recently. It is a constituent of many types of plastic that are often used in food packaging and to make food containers such as bottles and to line food and beverage cans and tins.

Bisphenol A (BPA) was discovered in the 1890s and tested as an artificial eostrogen in the 1930s, before being used to harden polycarbonate plastics, and make epoxy resin, by research chemists in the 1950s. It is now used extensively worldwide in plastic production, with worldwide production estimated at over 2.2 million tons in 2009.

Recently there have been concerns raised about the side effects of BPA use in food containers. There is currently no consensus opinion among the health authorities and organisations of the world about these possible issues, though many studies have shown links or possible links between BPA exposure and health problems. These include possible effects to the metabolic, endocrine and neurological systems of the body.

Most of these studies have been conducted on animals only, but there have been links shown between BPA exposure in animals and increased risks of health problems including asthma and cancers including breast cancer and leukemia, as well as decreased neurological, sexual and thyroid function.

While the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that BPA is safe at the current levels occurring in foods, it has banned the use of BPA in baby bottles. BPA in baby bottles is also banned in the EU, Turkey and Canada. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has also concluded that exposure to low levels of BPA is safe, though it continues to review new evidence on the potential health risks of BPA.
